Updates!

I've had a lot of people comment at events lately that they are worried to clean their PKP items! DON'T BE!! Just pop your collar/leash/harness/bandana/bed pillow in the washing machine on cold with the rest of your washing, and hang over the shower rod to dry! Easy peasy!
Although everything we make certainly is SPECIAL, there are no special care instructions to add extra work to your day.

Just because Miso doesn't like to get washed, doesn't mean his harness has to suffer the same fate!

Another very important announcement: Miso is a bit of a drama-king. I have realized that when he's sleeping he looks like he's been tragically killed in a Shakespearean-style way, possibly by a jaded lover or a rival Capulet. Exhibit A:

Hummus has tried to call someone for help, but fell asleep himself. Is there a useless, sleepy, snorty character in Shakespeare? Because if there is, Hummus would be that guy.

Woofstock aftermath!

Woofstock was incredible! Thank you all who came out despite our rainy Saturday! At least we had a lovely sunny Sunday and some great events!

We saw some pretty amazing dogs and I have a ton of new customer photos from the event to share! Check the album out on the facebook fanpage: www.facebook.com/peachykeenpets
If you become a fan on facebook, you also get updates on new fabrics, one-day-only deals and more!

We've also had a great photoshoot with Megan Battersby Photography, one of the pictures from the day is this one of me and the pug duo, Hummus and Miso! They are the inspiration for this whole business, they are the most integral part of the process! The boys are modeling red and blue sailor symbols collars and leashes for the shoot, it's so weird for me to see them without their harnesses on!

I am also launching some really fun new products, the start of these are pet beds made from vintage hardshell suitcases! In this photo, a punky Pom named Tiffany took a seat in the Movie Monster case at Woofstock! These beds have safety precautions built in with a strap on the back that keeps the case open, and it can be removed when you want to travel with your pooch! Put your toys, dog bowls and food inside and you're good to go!
Each bed is totally unique. I have various colours, sizes, and you can always pick your fabric for the pillow yourself.

I also have a few other items to launch in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for that!!! It's a fun surprise!

Looking for his Forever Home - Meet Sanford!

Peachy Keen Pets has been directly impacted by the wonderful Pug charity, Pugalug Pug Rescue, as we adopted our lovely pug Hummus from there back in 2008! Pugalug has rescued 171 pugs since October, 2005, and everyone involved has taken part out of the kindness of their hearts on a volunteer basis. Every now and again there are dogs on their site that I am going post on this blog so they get more exposure and hopefully find their forever home that much faster!

So... MEET SANFORD!!

Sanford is a friendly and laid-back 9 year old black pug that should make any potential adopter a great companion! Visit http://pugalug.com/sanford.html to get his full story, medical updates, adoption requirements, and of course, to actually fill in an adoption form!!

This sweetheart is good with kids, cats and other dogs, is well house-trained and is already crate-trained, though he doesn't need it and would prefer to snuggle with you instead. He is already neutered and has a clean bill of health! He does require someone who will be diligent about putting ointment once or twice a day in each of his eyes for life, and will monitor his food intake, as he could stand to lose a few more pounds! He loves scratches behind his ears, snuggling and napping, and occasionally playing with some stuffed toys :)

This charmer will be sure to win your heart. Check out the Pugalug site for information about him, and the other pugs in their care! Pugalug Pug Rescue is a registered charity, and you can make donations to help with future rescues on their website.

Meet the Pug Mascots!

Meet Miso: a.k.a. "The Rocket Scientist", Moosh Poosh, Meeses Pieces, Booboodooboos

Birthday:
March 16, 2003

Likes:
Eating grass, snorting, sleeping upside down, snuggling after 7pm until morning walk, eagle-eyeing the floor on taco night to catch fallen debris!

Dislikes:
Taking a bath, hearing babies cry on TV

About:
Miso is the brains of the operation, clearing besting Hummus in all intellectual pursuits. He knows so many words we've had to spell words out, change entire sentences to be vague or in another language so he won't know what we're saying. He knows the special ring on the phone that indicates that someone has buzzed up to our apartment, and is the sneakiest ninja in disguise you'll ever meet! Example: Miso lures Hummus out of his favourite chair by finding a bone, bringing it to him by the chair, scratching chair to get attention, Hummus jumps out to eat bone, Miso jumps in chair. Brilliant.

On a side note, Miso always has purple bellybutton lint. Seriously. At least once a day there is purple lint in there.

Meet Hummus: a.k.a. "The Caveman", Hummy, Hummy Wums, Potato-Body, Hoomaloomah

Birthday: November 24, 2002

Likes: YOU. All of you. Also, sitting on your lap facing outward, giving kisses, and getting belly tickles

Dislikes: Not touching you all the time

About: Hummus has 3 brain cells. One to do basic eat, sleep, walk functions, one to give as much love as possible in as much time as he's got to give it, and the most powerful brain cell he has is to watch Miso's reactions to things going on around the house and copy him. Hummus is also a rescue coming to us from the Pugalug Pug Rescue, a registered charity based in Toronto. Hummus had a hard life growing up in a puppymill in Kansas, but found his way to our home and hearts when he was 5 1/2 years old. When he was put up on the Pugalug website I knew he was meant to be ours and he luckily, he came to us shortly after!

Housetraining Issues With Rescues

If you have adopted a male rescue dog and are having trouble with marking and incontinence, we might be able to help!

Bellybands are a safe, non-threatening, and comfortable way for your male dogs marking to stay away from your stuff! A thick, stretchy piece of fabric with velcro closure goes around your male dogs genital area and fastens at on his back. You place a feminine pad inside to catch the urine, and replace when necessary. (Doggie diapers are more appropriate for female dogs as far as I am aware, and there are many great brands out there).

For us, we have adopted an amazing pug named Hummus, and he only marks our home when we leave the house. We don't crate our pugs when we leave the house and we don't plan to begin doing it, so for us, the bellyband was a life (and furniture) saver! Since we can never catch him in the act, we haven't been able to train away from this behaviour, and because he lived in such sad conditions in a puppymill for the first 5.5 years of his life, we don't think we will be able to.
Hummus happily puts his bellyband on because we don't make putting it on a punishment, just part of our routine. When we leave, we put the CLEAN bellyband on and give him a treat. Because the fabric is stretchy, he can run, play, lie down, sit and scratch with no restrictions.
When we get home, we take it off, throw out the pad if it's dirty, and pop the bellyband in the wash when needed. We only find it dirty one time out of five.

If your dog doesn't like putting it on, try without the pad for a few minutes a day under supervision. Give a treat when it goes on. Don't let your dog play with it. Don't put it on so tight that it's uncomfortable. Always use a quality extra-long or overnight feminine pad that isn't too thick, and preferably one that has wings to catch anything that might try to leak out the sides. This will give you the very best results.

Another example of a dog needing a bellyband is when they mark out of excitement or when at relatives house with animals that invoke marking. We have dog friends that come over and our dogs smell encourages other male dogs to mark, so they might wear a bellyband so that they don't make a mess and start a pee-pattern in the house! Maybe you've been embarrassed going home for the holidays and with all the excitement your dog marks on everything they can! It happens, and a bellyband would be for you.

Most rescue organizations will promote bellybands so that you and your rescue will bond with little frustration regarding marking, because rescues can require so much more work. Adopting Hummus was the best decision for us and we have never regretted it, and a bellyband has helped us along quite a deal with the more challenging parts!

If you would like a bellyband, they are only $8 from Peachy Keen Pets. I make them with a nice, soft, stretchy fabric that is totally comfortable, washable and very durable! If you have any questions, email me. All I require is the measurement around his boy parts! See the picture above to see Pitch modeling his bellyband with a big smile :)
